Does DMZ Early Access progress carry over to the full launch?

This is the question that decides whether the early access window is worth playing at all. The short version is yes for the progression you grind on purpose — DMZ levels, weapon XP, unlocks — and unconfirmed for the operator-side prestige systems. Here is the item-by-item breakdown with a source grade on every line.

What you unlock in the window is what you keep at launch

Facts checked against official sources onOctober 22, 2026. See oureditorial policyfor how each claim is graded.

The short answer

Yes for the things you would grind on purpose. DMZ levels run on their own 1–70 track and carry over. Weapon XP, attachments and camos are officially confirmed to carry over too — Activision says so directly in its launch-day progression post. What we cannot confirm is operator prestige and the dog tag progression — so if that is your reason to play early, ask support before you commit a weekend to it.

The short answer

Activision’s launch-day progression post is explicit about the weapon side of it:“Get an early start on the Weapon Camo grind with the release of DMZ Early Access on October 20 for digital pre-orders and pre-purchases! Level up your weapons and earn Attachments and Camos that will be available in Multiplayer at the game’s official launch on October 23.”Official

The same post settles the relationship between the two tracks: “XP earned while playing DMZ also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression, but XP earned in Multiplayer or Call of Duty: Warzone does not contribute to your DMZ Level.” So DMZ early access moves your Multiplayer loadout unlocks, and the reverse does not hold.Official

The older “XP carries into launch” line — which we previously graded as an official statement we had only read third-hand — is now confirmed on Activision’s own page, so the grade on those lines has moved up.

Grades follow our editorial policy. Lines marked "Not confirmed" are genuinely open questions, not soft negatives — we left them unfilled rather than guess.

What does not carry over

The link between the two tracks runs one way only. XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not raise your DMZ level — DMZ has its own 1–70 track — while DMZ XP does count towards your 1–55 player progression. If you were planning to unlock a weapon through campaign or multiplayer progression, DMZ early access does not do that for you.

Anything still in your backpack is at risk. The extraction rule applies to every run, including the last one before launch: unsecured items are lost if you fail to extract. Bank your gear before the window closes rather than on launch day.

Why it is worth the weekend

Players really are grinding before launch

It is not a theoretical benefit. During the early access period, Steam reviews for Modern Warfare 4 carried a visible cluster of players talking about exactly this — finishing the campaign story and then grinding before the game releases.Media report

The shape of a sensible three-day plan is on theFOB progression page: orders and stations first, then the Gunsmith and the bounty loop, then the dog tag track at level 20. If you are playing with the carry over question in mind, the first two days are where the confirmed value is.

Why players grind before October 23

Because DMZ levels and weapon XP are the two things that are both confirmed to carry over and fast to earn — and because Activision itself points out that the weapon levels you earn in the window are the ones you will be using on October 23. Everything else in the window is an argument about a specific number — and the cheapest way to make that argument is to check thegrading policy before you spend your weekend. What the weapon levels become in Multiplayer is covered on ourMW4 Multiplayer page.

Progress carry over FAQ

Do DMZ levels carry over to launch?
Yes. DMZ level is your own progression track running from 1 to 70, and it is the main thing the early access window is worth. It continues rather than resetting.
Do weapon XP and attachments carry over?
Yes, and this one is now official. Activision’s launch-day progression post tells players to level up their weapons during DMZ Early Access because the attachments and camos they unlock are available in Multiplayer on October 23. Modern Warfare 4 has a single weapon camo grind shared across all modes.
Does DMZ early access raise my Multiplayer level?
Yes, in one direction only. Activision states that XP earned while playing DMZ also contributes to your overall 1-55 Player Progression, the track that unlocks weapons, equipment, perks and killstreaks. The reverse is not true: XP earned in Multiplayer or Warzone does not contribute to your DMZ level, which runs separately from 1 to 70.
Do Operator traits and prestige carry over?
Unconfirmed. Operator traits, dog tag levels and prestige progress are not covered by the official messaging we could read. If prestige is your reason to play early, ask support before committing a weekend to it.
