One date does not match

The Steam store page reads "Coming 22 Oct, 2026"; Activision's own DMZ page and its launch announcement say October 23. We publish both and follow the official one — the early access window itself is unaffected, and it opens October 20.

What you are getting into

MW4 DMZ is an extraction shooter — and it has its own level track

You deploy into the Hajin exclusion zone with a squad or alone, loot, complete contracts, and try to get your gear back out. Run out of time or die and most of what you were carrying is gone.

  • DMZ levels run 1–70, separate from your multiplayer rank — so you can start climbing on day one.
  • The Forward Operating Base unlocks new stations as that level goes up.
  • Not the same thing as the older Modern Warfare III DMZ early access. Old guides and 2024 forum threads describe a different event.

Activision describes it as playing an off-the-books asset behind enemy lines, where every run forces hard choices about what to secure and when to get out.
Is MW4 DMZ free to play?
No. Unlike the 2022 DMZ, which was a free download, MW4 DMZ requires owning a copy of Modern Warfare 4. Activision confirmed on October 15, 2026 that MW4 is a separate purchase and is not available on Game Pass at launch.
When does MW4 DMZ Early Access start?
October 20, 2026 at 10 AM Pacific Time, globally. That is the afternoon of October 20 for the Americas and Europe, and the early hours of October 21 across most of Asia and Oceania. It runs until the full launch on October 23.
Do I need the Vault Edition?
No. A digital pre-order or pre-purchase of either the Standard digital edition or the Vault edition qualifies. The Vault edition adds content, not access.
Is DMZ Early Access free?
No. It is part of the paid game — there is no separate DMZ purchase and no free trial during the window.
Does a physical copy qualify?
The official wording names digital pre-orders and pre-purchases only. Physical copies are not named, so treat them as not qualifying unless Activision says otherwise.
Why does DMZ still say locked?
Almost always one of four things: the purchase was not a qualifying digital pre-order, the DMZ content pack was never installed, the update had not landed, or the local clock had not reached the start time yet.
How many Operator traits are there in MW4 DMZ?
66 confirmed. Each of the three trait trees has six Main traits and sixteen Minor traits — 22 per tree, 66 in total — and eighteen trait points earned as your Dog Tag levels up from Steel to Onyx III.
Does my DMZ progress carry over to launch?
Yes for the progression you grind on purpose. DMZ levels run on their own 1–70 track, and Activision confirms that the weapon levels, attachments and camos you earn during DMZ Early Access are available in Multiplayer on October 23. Operator prestige and the dog tag track are not confirmed yet.
When does MW4 come out?
Friday, October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision published the date but no launch hour, so the only clock time in this run-up is 10 AM Pacific on October 20 for DMZ Early Access. The Steam store page still reads October 22.
Is MW4 on Game Pass?
Not at launch. Activision confirmed on October 15, 2026 that Modern Warfare 4 is a standalone release and will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare III in the meantime.
