Is MW4 on Game Pass? No — but it arrives in Holiday 2027

Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 as a standalone release and will not be on Game Pass at launch. Activision says it joins the subscription in Holiday 2027. Here is the official wording, what Game Pass Ultimate subscribers keep in the meantime, and what buying the game actually gets you.

The official answer

Not at launch — and not until Holiday 2027

No — Modern Warfare 4 is not on Game Pass at launch. Activision’s launch announcement is unambiguous:

“Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 as a standalone release and will not be available on Game Pass at launch.”

And on timing: “Modern Warfare 4 will launch as a standalone release. To play the game at launch, players must purchase it separately; it will not be included with Game Pass until Holiday 2027.”Official

Microsoft’s own store listing agrees, twice over: “Game purchase required” and “Not on Xbox Game Pass this year.” Official

When it does reach Game Pass

Holiday 2027. That is the whole of Activision’s commitment — the year, and the season, and nothing more specific. There is no month, no date, and no separate tier announced. Official

Two practical consequences. Anyone who buys the game on October 23 keeps it — a Game Pass addition later does not retroactively make your purchase a subscription, and Activision has said nothing about discounts or credit for people who bought early. And if you are weighing a subscription against a purchase now, the honest comparison is not “MW4 on Game Pass versus MW4 on Game Pass”; it is MW4 now for a purchase price versusMW4 in Holiday 2027 as part of a subscription you may already pay for anyway.

What Game Pass Ultimate still includes

Subscribers are not left with nothing. Activision states:

“Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will continue to have access to legacy Call of Duty titles (Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III).”

So the three most recent Call of Duty releases stay in the subscription, and Modern Warfare 4 — the newest one — does not. That is the shape of the offer at launch. Official

One more Xbox-side detail worth knowing: the store listing marks Modern Warfare 4 ascloud playable with Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate, with the game purchase required. That is about streaming the game you own to a device that is not your console — it is not a way to play MW4 without buying it.

How to play MW4 on October 23

Buy the digital editionThe only way to play Modern Warfare 4 on October 23. Standard Digital, Vault Edition or the platform store version.
Pre-order and get both windowsCampaign Early Access from October 16 and DMZ Early Access from October 20, on top of the day-one launch.
Or wait for Holiday 2027When Activision says MW4 finally joins Game Pass. Everyone who bought it separately keeps their copy either way.

Since Game Pass is not carrying the early access, the pre-order is the only route into both windows. From Activision’s own announcement:

Is MW4 on Game Pass at launch?

Does buying MW4 now get me anything once it joins Game Pass?

What do I get for pre-ordering MW4?
Digital pre-orders include Campaign Early Access from October 16, DMZ Early Access from October 20, the Hunter Killer Operator Skin, the Gilded Pearl Camo Pack and the Inner Circuit M4 Weapon Blueprint. On Xbox console the Inner Circuit blueprint gets an OG Green translucent treatment for XBOX’s 25th anniversary.
